Featured Birds

Below is a list of featured birds. This verbiage will probably be changed. Do we want the pictures on this page, as well? And we'll probably tweak the "look and feel" of this, too.

Green Jay

Green Jays are common in the Texas Rio Grande Valley and are found north and east as far as Corpus Christi. The previous year’s young often stay with their parents and help defend the nesting territory.

Northern Cardinal

The brightly-colored Northern Cardinal is one of America’s favorite backyard birds. Well adapted to backyard and parks, Northern Cardinal populations have increased in the eastern half of the U.S. Their strong, whistled song is a favorite ringtone for many.

Roseate Spoonbill

Roseate Spoonbills use their long, flat bills to sift for small food items. These strange, long-legged birds nest in trees and have bright orange tails. They are common along the Texas coast and southern Florida.

White-throated Sparrow

The song of the White-throated Sparrow is often described as sounding like ""Oh sweet Canada"" or ""Old Sam Peabody, Peabody, Peabody."" The stripe over the eye can be tan or white. Tan-stripped birds almost always mate with white-stripped birds, and vice-versa.
