Bald Eagle

(Haliaeetus leucocephalus)

Previously on endangered species list, but populations have receovered in many areas. Found along large lakes or man-made impoundments, rivers, swamps, and coastal areas. Nest is built of sticks, and is lined with mosses, needles, grasses, and other materials. May be used several years in a row, with new material added each year. Nest is usually located in a tree up to 180 feet above the ground. Although the Bald Eagle is widely known to feed on fish, in the winter, it frequently follows waterfowl in migration and feeds on sick or wounded ducks and geese.
